It's a sad, sad day when the BEST publication in the climbing world to ever have come along closes it's doors due to lack of subscribers and the current state of the economy. The bottom line is, Alpinist, having just published it's 25th issue, has unfortunately not been able to survive with it's limited subscriptions. The book has been a god-send to the climbing world with it's incredible stories, photos, and unique mountain profiles, unique with it's limited advertisements, and looking more like a coffee table piece than a magazine. Please read the following statement, as posted on alpinist.com:"Jackson, Wyoming — October 16, 2008 — Alpinist LLC, which publishes the climbing magazine Alpinist, runs the website www.alpinist.com and produces The Alpinist Film Festival, announced today that the October 2008 financial crisis has forced them to suspend operations.
Founded in 2002 by Marc Ewing and Christian Beckwith, Alpinist began in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, as an archival-quality publication dedicated to world alpinism and adventure climbing. The quarterly quickly gained a reputation for both superior writing and beautiful photography; by 2004, Italian climbing legend Reinhold Messner called it, "The best climbing magazine in the world today." Alpinist went on to win numerous awards; in March 2005 it was featured in a seven-page article in Outside Magazine ("The Purists") that explored its impact on American climbing."
I pray that some salvation lies ahead, and that the folks who produced this amazing journal can find some support enabling them to continue in some fashion, if only by maintaining the web site.
